Storage Stools (2008)
Many folks I know
sit on milk crates, overturned,
But to maximize space in your home and stability under your bum
Why not fit upright boxes with slabs and stitches,
Seats suited
to your liking?
Former milk crates purchased for pennies from thrift stores. Denim from otherwise-unsalvageable jeans (Brian's, left and right; mine, center). Decorative elements are courtesy of my rag bag, and a little bit of crocheting.

I cut the three seats from a single, former cabinet door that I found next to my dumpster in Austin. Conveniently, the door was already the right width, but I did have to slice three matching lengths from its height. To attach the denim covers to the seats, I simply used hot glue. (If I were to make more stools in the future, I might attach them in a different way to allow for laundering.) I nailed small scraps of wood, also from the cabinet door, to two opposite corners of the underside of each seat, to make each top sit as safely as possible in each crate. Note aerated storage space, within!
