unlucky ducky

Suddenly, fourteen of us are standing here in line.
Understandably, thirteen of them aren’t me.
Demographically, twelve of the waiting are men.
If a dozen donuts come along, two of us are out.

I sense another day in doldrums –
Another “go” at sucking my thumbs,
Because my vessels just aren’t whirring,
Because my vision is slowly blurring.
And I can’t breathe too well.

Given no time to consider my options,
I hopped Greyhound and I left all for auction –
Photographs of Swede-Finns
And Poles.

Maniacal pups nip at my ankles,
The empty trees offer nothing but nightlife...
Hardly a dream that I held!

Comparisons to the thirties are meaningless;
Eighty years ago my boss wasn’t born yet.
He said “goodbye” to me without reference to precedent.
Everyone else is eating tonight.

Luck, be a lady tonight.
Don’t let me out of your sight.
Luck, if you’ve ever been a lady to begin with -
Luck, be a lady tonight!
